Firestone Chest and Allery Center Tower Expansion

Hamilton, Ontario Canada
To meet the mission of the Firestone Chest and Allergy Center to be a world class center of research, they wanted to build a tower of clinics, offices and state of the art lab facilities.  FKP Architects was hired by the joint venture architecture team to plan and design research facilities and diagnostic imaging/nuclear medicine areas of the project.  The hospital broke ground in May 2001 to build a new eight-story tower plus a basement and below grade parking facility.

Approximately 36,000 dgsf of new wet labs and associated support space such as microscope rooms, tissue culture and glass washing facilities.  FKP discussed the benefits of a modular vs. open plan and centralized vs. decentralized offices.  The final plan had three lab areas all unassigned as yet, but planned generically for investigators to be recruited and relocated from McMaster University.  Research subjects will be tested and interviewed in the adjacent 12,000 sf of dry labs where they have allergy chambers and an aerosol lab.  A 7,200 sf nuclear medicine/PET suite was also planned on Level 0.
