Orange, California
To keep pace with the increasing census of critical care patients, Children's Hospital of Orange County converted 25,000 sf of shell space on the sixth-floor of their existing bed tower into a new state of the art 18-bed pediatric intensive care unit and a 12-bed cardiovascular intensive care unit. Following the opening of the new sixth-floor unit, lower levels L2 and L3 were converted to new neonatal intensive care and Hem/Onc beds respectively. The new NICU included 3,700 sf providing four private and eight open pods.
The new unit was designed to meet several goals including providing more lighting, improved patient access and patient safety, increased equipment space, and to incorporate concepts in a healing, family and patient centered design. Equipment Collaborative assisted the A/E team with construction RFI’s and final product selections.
