As a leading provider of specialized pediatric care, Cook Children’s Medical Center has served the patients and families for many years. Their growth included the need to address the hospital’s most critical patients who needed more space at the bedside and more capacity to support the demands during peak census. In 2003, this $53 million four-story expansion increased the bed capacity to 282. Two of the floors were dedicated to medical/surgical beds, a new 33-bed PICU and a 10-bed addition to the existing 36-bed NICU. The project included a 20-bed cardiology step-down telemetry unit where existing telemetry systems were relocated to the new area. Ancillary areas included expanding rehabilitation services, patient admin areas and respiratory therapy. A pharmacy expansion included an IV prep area, drug dispensing, and pharmacy work areas. Imaging areas included a new MRI and 5 ultrasound rooms.
Full scale mockups of a typical ICU, NICU and a med/surg patient room were used to allow staff, families, and the design team an opportunity to review in advance of construction and provided the forum for reviewing finishes, equipment and furniture. EC has completed a variety of projects including an outpatient ambulatory surgery and imaging center and a Cath Lab/CVOR project and an interventional MRI.
